IS THE STEREOTYPE OTHER NATIONALITIES HAVE ABOUT SPANIARDS GOOD FOR US?
Over the last few years there has been much controversy as to whether it is better that national stereotypes in Spain do not exist or to have stereotypes which define Spaniards. Many argue that having stereotypes is by far the best option, while other claim that not being prejudged for being Spanish has more pros than cons. In this essay, I will analyze the pros and cons in order to come to a conclusion.
Undoubtedly, having stereotypes can be a great way to boost tourism and provide security. It is a well known fact that having stereotypes offers the possibility of increasing tourism in our country because most of our stereotypes are positive and this favour the vision that other countries have about us. There is also the cliché that national stereotypes are great because they provide security for the people that are travelling to Spain, it is obvious that people feel more confident if they know what they are dealing with.
However, when analyzed in more detail, national stereotypes can also be a great source of inconvenience. If we look closer, we will realize that stereotypes are not actually all it is cracked up to be. For one thing, stereotypes may lead to believe that everybody in Spain has the same tastes and way of being. We should not forget either that stereotypes could very easily lead to racism, because they are a way to prejudge people.
On the other hand, avoiding national stereotypes offers you a far wider range of possibilities when it comes to keeping an open mind or having more fun finding out new places for yourself. Take for instance keeping an open mind. Experience shows that people who do not take into account stereotypes are more open-minded and more able to cope with new situations. Another major advantage is that your ability to enjoy is much higher if something might surprise you.
To sum up, even though Spanish stereotypes has some advantages like boosting tourism or providing security for tourists, it can also lead to believe that people do not have personality and to provoke racism. Besides, the fact that avoiding national stereotypes allows you to have an open mind and offers more fun when it comes to discover a new place, makes it quite clear that avoiding stererotypes constitutes the best option by far.
